SMYRNA - Leland C. Slaughter, (Penner), went home to be with the Lord on De. 18, 2016. He was born in Smyrna, on May 15, 1924, to Harry and Florence Slaughter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Denny Slaughter and Thelma Brown (William); and a sister-in-law, Dagmar Slaughter. He is survived by his brother, Nelson P. Slaughter; his nephew, David G. Slaughter and his wife, Shirley, and their sons, Joseph Leary (Denise), and Jason Leary, and their children. Leland served in the United States Army during World War II, and received a Combat Infantryman Badge, Purple Heart, five Battle Stars, and a Distinguished Unit Badge. Leland retired after 30 years of civil service. He enjoyed sports and was a charter member of Garrison's Lake Golf Club. He was a proud life member of the Citizen's Hose Fire Company of Smyrna. A viewing will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2016 from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Faries Funeral Chapel, located at 29 S. Main St. in Smyrna, where funeral services will begin at 11 am. Burial will follow with military honors at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Smyrna. A special Thank-You to the care givers at Delaware Hospice and Citizen's Hose Company of Smyrna.
