Leah Irene Alice Snyder Grindlay, 87 FREDERICA - Leah Irene Alice Snyder Grindlay, 87, of Frederica, died Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, at the Delaware Hospice Center, Milford. Mrs. Grindlay was born in Chazy, N.Y., the daughter of the late Julius and Celina (Sweenard) Gerou. She worked for the Pal Blade company in Plattsburgh, N.Y. and then as a supervisor of food service at Plattsburgh Air Force Base, Plattsburgh, N.Y. for several years. After she retired, she moved to Delaware to live with her daughter and son-in-law for the next 30 years. Leah was a charter member of the Frederica Spring Creek Lions Club where she was recognized for her distinguished service by being awarded the Melvin Jones and the Ralph Helms Fellowships. She was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Harrington and a member of the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary. She enjoyed spending time with her family and working actively with parish functions and activities. She enjoyed bingo, camping, listening to country music, dancing and bowling. In many respects, Leah was considered a second mother to her granddaughter Pelma. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter "Jake" Grindlay; her youngest child, a son, Ronald G. Snyder, Sr; three brothers, Julius "Buster" Gerou, Edward Gerou, and Frank Gerou; and four sisters, Bessie Garvey, Evelyn Denschler, Edith Gerou, and Priscilla Steele. She is survived by two sons, Ken Snyder and his wife Susan of Cadyville, N.Y., and Gary Snyder and his companion Sheila Putnam, of Mineville, N.Y.; and one daughter. Donna Salerno and her husband Tommaso of Frederica; 11 grandchildren Gaye, Laurie, Ronald Jr, Tammy, Barbara, David, Casey, Evan, Cathy, Becky and Pelma as well as several great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 25, at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 109 Dixon Street, Harrington. where friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Friends may call on Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the McKnatt, Carpenter & Baker Funeral Home, 50 Commerce Street, Harrington. Entombment will be in Sharon Hills Cemetery, Dover. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
