Lawrence Martin Baker III

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Dr. Lawrence Martin Baker III, died May 25 in Chestertown. He was born July 8, 1925 in Franklin, Pa., the son of Lawrence M. Baker and Elizabeth M. Black Baker and grew up in Coraopolis, Pa. Dr. Baker enlisted in the US Army in 1943. After basic training he was sent to St. Louis University for college courses. He received new orders to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., for what was then a new technique for giving wounded soldiers whole blood. He was sent to Saipan in the Pacific in preparation for the expected invasion of Japan. After serving in the Army from 1943-1946, he attended Harvard College. He graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1951 and completed his internship at the Geisinger Memorial Hospital, Danville Pa., in 1951-1952 followed by his surgical residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, 1952-1957. Dr. Baker practiced general and thoracic surgery at Kent General Hospital, now Bay Health, in Dover, Del., from 1957-1993. He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and The American Board of Surgery and a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners. He and his wife moved to Heron Point, Chestertown, in 2000. His favorite activities were sailing, hiking, reading, and travel. Dr. Baker is survived by his wife of 62 years, Margaret (Margot) Holliday Hoon Baker; four daughters, Christine (Thomas) Brockmeyer of Pittsburgh, Pa., Nancy (Jonathan) Coffin of Greenwich, Conn., Marianne (Wiley) Kitchell of Seattle, Wash., Barbara Alison Baker, MD of Pewaukee, Wis.; nine grandchildren; and two great grandchildren; and his sister, Elizabeth (Richard) Kuci of Signal Mountain, Tenn. His sister Jean Martin Baker predeceased him. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Chester River Home Care and Hospice, 100 Brown St., Chestertown, MD 21620 or The Humane Society of Kent County, MD, Inc., P.O. Box 352, Chestertown, MD 21620. Burial will be private. A gathering of friends and family will be announced at a later date. Arrangements by Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A.
