Kenneth D. Fountain

MILFORD - Kenneth D. Fountain, 86, of Milford, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Dec. 2, 2011 in Milford. Mr. Fountain was the son of the late Asbury and Martha (Curry) Fountain. Kenneth was a loving family man, accomplished educator and civil servant, music lover and contributor to his community. Upon completing high school, Kenneth was drafted to the United States Army, where he served under General George Patton in W.W. II. After the war, Kenneth received his BA in Elementary Education from Delaware State College and taught in the Indian River School District for 31 years. A member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church he was heavily involved in giving back to his community as a Scout Master, Milford Parks and Rec Commissioner, worker for the polls at election time, appointed committee member for Project Impact and dedicated "Greeter" at Walmart. Kenneth was awarded the Key to the City of Milford for his community involvement. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Blue Hen Post 6483, Milford, a life member of the National Education Association, a member of the Milford Senior Center, and a life member of Carlisle Fire Company, Station 42, Milford. Kenneth was the first black firefighter to join Carlisle Fire Company, where he served as Fire Captain, served as an EMT, served as a Board of Director and served on numerous committees. In 1991 and 1992 Kenneth was honored as firefighter with the most alarms. In 1994 he was honored with Elks Fireman of the Year for his devotion to all aspects within the fire department. In 2006 Kenneth received the Carlisle Fire Company Presidential Award and was inducted into the Delaware Firefighter Hall of Fame. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Constance K. Fountain; his first wife, Gloria Fountain; four brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife of 49½ years, Cleo Fountain; his son, Eric A. Fountain; a granddaughter, Terrian Hicks; a grandson, Juwan Hicks; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. A Celebration of Ken's Life with firefighter's honors will be held 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 9, 2011 at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 300 North Street, Milford where friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Burial with military honors will be 2 p.m. in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Patriots Way, Millsboro. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 300 North Street, Milford, DE 19963. Arr. by Lofland Funeral Home, Milford, DE.
