Kendal Barker Prettyman, 85 GREENWOOD - Kendal Barker Prettyman, of the Country Rest Home, Greenwood, died Saturday, June 28, 2008, in Greenwood. He was 85. Mr. Prettyman, a native of Lewes, and son of William Olva and Lottie Spicer Prettyman. He was a former resident of both Georgetown and Rehoboth Beach. He was a 1941 graduate of Lewes High School. Mr. Prettyman worked at Fort Miles under the U.S. Army Engineers prior to enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps, Fifth Division, at the height of World War II, and participated in the Battle of Iwo Jima and was involved in the occupation of Japan. He joined the Army Reserves in 1949 and retired in 1983 as a major. After the war, he was parts manager for Henlopen Motor Co., Lewes, (later Don Gallagher Motors) for 11 years. Mr. Prettyman then worked for Georgetown Trust, later acquired by Wilmington Trust Co., serving 32 years before retiring as a senior banking officer in 1989. He was past president of the Sussex Chapter of the American Institute of Banking. He also served in various officer positions with his children's school band boosters, wrestling boosters and Georgetown Little League. Mr. Prettyman served as secretary of Georgetown Union Cemetery from 1968 to 2002 and was a past treasurer of The Salvation Army- Georgetown branch. He was an original charter member of the Delmarva Easter Seals and also volunteered at the Sussex Pregnancy Care Center and with Meals on Wheels. Mr. Prettyman was a member of Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 9264, Fifth Marine Division Association, and the Marine Corps League, along with its Military Order of the Devil Dogs. He was a past member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Lewes, and a past member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Georgetown, where he served as Sunday school superintendent, chairman of the trustees, chairman of the finance committee and Methodist Men president. He joined Lewes Church of Christ in 1995. His first wife of 45 years, Jeanette R., died April 15, 1993. He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Genevieve B. Prettyman of Rehoboth Beach; sons, Ray K. and wife Linda of Largo, Fla., Keith R. of Georgetown, and Ralph W. and wife Andrea of Milford; daughter, Beth P. Berrie and husband Chuck of Hartly; stepson, Richard Burton of Selbyville; stepdaughters, Cheryl Skinner and husband Richard of Magnolia, and Carol Dukes and husband Joseph of Frankford; eight grandchildren, Erica P. Jarmon, Tabitha, Jacob, Zachary, Alyssa, and Austin Prettyman, and Dalton and Sawyer Berrie; one great-grandson; five step-grandchildren, Richard and Lee Skinner, Alisha White, and Crystal and David Dukes; and five step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday in Bethel United Methodist Church, 129 W. 4th St., Lewes, at where a viewing will begin at 2 p.m. Graveside services and burial will immediately follow at Bethel Methodist Cemetery, Lewes, with full military honors.
