CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Kathleen Bottomley Landskroener passed away peacefully in the comfort and quiet of her home on November 25, 2017. She was born in Camden, N.J., on Jul. 8, 1926, the third of seven children of Gordon Bottomley and Constance Sharpe Bottomley of Merchantville, N.J.
Kathy married Ted Landskroener on Nov. 1, 1947, and they recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
The couple moved to Chestertown in 1949 when Ted joined his father Clarence and brother Smitty in a new business, Delmarva Sash and Door. The couple settled for a while in an apartment on Water Street, and Kathy's open, warm personality quickly won over the residents of downtown Chestertown.
Kathy gave birth to a daughter, Nancy, on May 6, 1950. Nancy was the first of five children. She was followed in the next ten years by the arrival of Chris, Jim, David and John. After Nancy's birth, the Landskroeners moved to Waterview Lane at Country Club Estates, where Kathy spent her time raising a house full of children among almost a dozen other families in similar, blissfully chaotic circumstances.
For almost thirty years, Kathy was a devoted mother and homemaker, yet she became active with volunteer work in the Chestertown community, most notable working many hours a week at the Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital Auxiliary and The Nearly New Shop in downtown Chestertown.
Growing up with one sister and five brothers, Kathy was an active athlete in her youth and, as an adult, enjoyed playing golf at Chester River Yacht and Country Club and bowling at the Queen Anne's Bowling Lanes in a Ladies League for many years. After her children had grown and established homes and families of their own, Kathy discovered a love of travel. In her sixties and seventies, she visited places all over the globe, including Australia, New Zealand, and Iceland. But her favorite destination was the United Kingdom, birthplace of her mother, and she returned many times to Ireland, her most-loved destination.
Kathy was predeceased by brothers, Gordon, Jim, and Howland. She is survived by a sister, Nancy; and brothers, Don and Bill; her husband, Ted; her five children, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The family will be welcoming visitors at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newman Funeral Home on Friday, Dec. 1, 2017 from 4 to 6 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church at 10 a.m. Parking will be available at the Kent County Courthouse.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company, 211 Maple Avenue, Chestertown, MD.
Arrangements by Fellows, Helfenbein & Newman Funeral Home, Chestertown. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.fhnfuneralhome.com
