EDITORS:

June 19th marks Juneteenth, the day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in the U.S. learned they were free.

The AP plans the following coverage. Find our latest plans in Coverage Plan:

TUESDAY, JUNE 10

JUNETEENTH-HISTORICAL DOCUMENT: The Dallas Historical Society is displaying from its permanent collection the only remaining copy of the official Juneteenth Order No. 3. This is one of the orders of hand-delivered to Texas in 1865 to declare that enslaved people were free. We use this document to tell the story of how word reached the enslaved population in Galveston. By JAMIE STENGLE. With AP photos and video.

MONDAY, JUNE 16

JUNETEENTH-EXPLAINER: Many Americans are celebrating Juneteenth, marking the day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in the U.S. learned they were free. For generations, Black Americans have recognized the end of one of history’s darkest chapters with joy, in the form of parades, street festivals, musical performances or cookouts. Four years after it became a federal holiday, there’s a push today for people to see beyond the revelry and learn about Juneteenth’s history. By TERRY TANG. With AP photos.

JUNETEENTH-SPONSORSHIPS: Juneteenth celebrations have scaled back due to funding gaps as companies and cities across the country retreat their support for diversity initiatives. By NADIA LATHAN. With AP photos, video.

TUESDAY, JUNE 17

JUNETEENTH-NATIVE TRIBES-FREEDMEN: While many across the country recognized Juneteenth as the end to the institution of slavery in America, some tribal nations in Oklahoma continued to own slaves until the following year, 1866. Today, many of the descendants of those formerly enslaved people are still fighting for full citizenship within those tribal nations.. By GRAHAM LEE BREWER. With AP photos and video.

THURSDAY, JUNE 19

JUNETEENTH-HOLIDAY: Juneteenth holiday observances will happen coast to coast. Events include a celebration organized by the Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire, a group formed in Portsmouth, where an enslaved woman successfully escaped George Washington’s pursuit. On Thursday, The Akwaaba Ensemble performs traditional African drumming at the site where more than 200 enslaved Africans were buried. There will also be a community performance of “Boots on the Ground,” a increasingly popular line dance among Black Americans. 11am ET. By HOLLY RAMER. With AP photos and video.

JUNETEENTH-GALVESTON PARADE: A live shot from the annual Juneteenth parade in Galveston, Texas. The Parade will begin at 3pm, stepping of at Ball Street from 26th to 41st. It ends at Wright Cuney Park, where the picnic will immediately follow. With AP photos and member video.
