MAGNOLIA - Julia Thorpe, of Magnolia, passed away Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, in Kent General Hospital, Dover. Julia was born, Sept. 17, 1922, in Blackbird, Del., to the late, Arthur & Mattie (Moore) Hurd. She had worked at the Elkton Powder Plant, during W.W.II, the Smyrna Home & Hospital, Woolworths 5 & 10, Playtex, for over 15 years, the Delaware Lottery, and as a mail room inserter for the Delaware State News, before retiring in 1996. Julia enjoyed doing word search puzzles, cooking, and spending time with family. She also loved animals. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Thorpe; her brothers, Clarence, Walter, Ralph & Arthur Hurd; a sister, Susie Webber; and a great-grandson, David Donnelly. Julia is survived by three children, Shirley Hammond-Stapley, of Felton; and two sons, Richard W. Hurd, of Harrington, and Jeffrey Thorpe, with whom she resided. Her three sisters, Pearl Cahall, of Bradenton, Fla.; Martha Allen & Mary Ann Simmons, of Dover; five grandchildren, Robin Walls of Harrington, Kim Wingrove of Houston, Del., Melissa Gifford of Vienna, Va., Matthew Hammond of Newark, and Craig Hurd of Felton. Thirteen great-grandchildren; and 8 great-great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces & nephews. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 7, 2016 in Pippin Funeral Home, Inc., 119 West Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, DE; where family and friends may view 1 hour before. Burial will follow in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover. Condolences may be sent via www.pippinfuneralhome.com.
