CHESWOLD - Joseph "Joe" Somers, 56, of Cheswold, died Saturday, March 29, 2014 of a heart attack. Joe was born in Pennsylvania on December 7, 1957 to Helen McComsey Irons. While still an infant, the family relocated to Smyrna where Joe was raised. In his youth, his hangout was Woodland Beach while attending Smyrna Schools. Shortly after school, he joined and served in the US Army until his duties were fulfilled. Joe was an expert carpenter and had many exceptional skills in the maintenance trade. He could fix just about anything and had a reputation for being quite the handyman. Many people knew Joe from his employment with the former Sheraton Hotel in Dover. More recently, Joe spent many Tuesdays and Fridays at Spence's Sale in Dover. He was frequently seen at Jim & Carol's Outside Market on N. Dupont Hwy. in Cheswold where he developed quite a customer base. He was well liked and many customers stopped by weekly to see what bargains he had. Sometimes people would donate products to him to sell or bring stuff for him to fix. His business blossomed over the last three years. Those that knew Joe knew he had a big heart. He would do anything for anyone. Before his decline in health, Joe loved being the life of the party whenever he was in the room. He was a jokester who had a great sense of humor and loved to make people laugh. He could always bring a smile to your face. Joe loved the outdoors and had many hobbies. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, working in the yard and firing up the BBQ. He was more relaxed in the outdoors than being inside. What Joe loved more than the outdoors was his loyal companion, and boxer, Lady Bella. He loved his dog more than life, and he knew she loved her daddy. Although Joe was raised in Smyrna, his heart was in Louisiana. He lived there for about 13 years and liked to call it home. He worked on the oil rigs, had crawfish boils, attended Mardi Gras and supported his favorite team The New Orleans Saints. Joe was a very outgoing person who will be missed by his family, friends, and all those that had the pleasure of meeting him. A hole has been left in all of our hearts, but we know he is at peace and isn't suffering anymore. Joe is gone, but will never be forgotten. Joe was preceded in death in 2004 by his mother, Helen McComsey Irons. He is survived by three daughters, Samantha Somers of Kenton, Jennifer Lorea of Dover, and Sonia Leslie of Tampa, Fla.; as well as his ex-wife of 22 years and his friend, Robin Kassing of Kenton; his sister, Linda Moore, her husband Gary & nephew Dereke Moore. He is also survived by two granddaughters and other nephews and a niece. Joe also leaves behind very dear friends, Jim and Carol Plummer, with whom he resided in Cheswold and spent many of his days; and friends, Bob and Nell Schneider of Louisiana whom always had a special place in his heart. A viewing is open to the public and scheduled for Monday, April 7, 2014 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., followed by a service at 7 p.m., at the Faries Funeral Chapel located at 29 S. Main St. in Smyrna. Burial will be private. Condolence letters may be sent by visiting www.fariesfuneralhome.com In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to help defray funeral expenses.
