John W. McGregor Sr.

John W. McGregor Sr., 90 DOVER - John W. McGregor Sr., of Dover, died Jan. 17, 2010, at the Delaware Hospice Center. His age was 90. Born in 1920, in Philadelphia, Pa., he was the son of the late John A. and Mabel McGregor. Upon graduation from Yale University in 1943 Mr. McGregor received a commission as a 2nd LT. in the United States Army Air Corps and served proudly during World War II. Mr. McGregor later re-enlisted and retired from the United States Air Force as a Chief Master Sergeant in 1962. He later went on to retire from Civil Service in 1983 where he had worked in the Aerial Port Squadron at Dover Air Force Base. Mr. McGregor was a member of the American Legion, and was the Walter L. Fox Post No. 2 past Finance Officer. He also had been a member of the Men of Malvern and Holy Cross Church. A dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, he will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him. Besides his parents, Mr. McGregor was predeceased by his son, Patrick B. McGregor; and three brothers, Edward, Elwood (Finn), infant James McGregor; and one sister, Mabel Madden. He is survived by his loving wife, Irene A. McGregor; three daughters, Kim Endres and her husband John of Dover, Eileen J. Doordan of Selbyville, and Maureen Rocheleau and her husband Ron of Dover; two sons, John W. McGregor Jr. of Dover, and Mike McGregor and his wife JoAnn of Camden; one sister, Patricia McGregor of Cape May Courthouse, N.J.; one brother, Robert McGregor and his wife Phyllis of Port Norris, N.J.; a daughter-in-law, Valerie Plessinger and her husband Craig of Columbus, Ohio; ten grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Jan. 22, at the Funeral Home of Michael J. Ambruso, 1175 S. State Street, Dover. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at noon, Saturday, Jan. 23, at Holy Cross Church, Dover. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to either the Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963; or Fisher House Manager, WRAMC Fisher House #56, 6900 Georgia Ave. NW, Washington, D.C., 20307.
