John T. Lythgoe, 88 DOVER - John T. Lythgoe, 88, husband of Evelyn (Dahm) Lythgoe passed away Monday March 1, 2010, at home, after a short illness. He was surrounded by his wife and family. John Lythgoe was born in Philadelphia, and lived most of his life there before retiring to Delaware in 1984. He is survived by his wife, along with six children, Jack, Sr. Anne Lythgoe, OP, Marge McGlinchey, Mark, Gerry and Matthew. He was preceded in death by his son, Paul and daughter Christine; his brother, Robert Lythgoe; and sisters, Catherine McCann and Mary Garnett. He is also survived by six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. A member of St. Polycarp Parish, He was a dedicated member of the St. Vincent dePaul Society for many years. A man of the Church all his life, John Lythgoe was ready to help any person in need, without question or without thought of his own time or effort. In 2008 he was offered the Order of Merit by the diocese of Wilmington who recognized his distinctive contribution to the Church and his generous service. In typical fashion, he accepted the award, but did not attend the ceremony, not wanting to draw attention to himself, believing that the Vincentian spirit required him to "do good and disappear." In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Vincent dePaul Society c/o St. Polycarp Parish, 135 Ransom Lane, Smyrna, DE 19977. At his request, the family will hold a celebration of his life at a later time. Private Interment will take place at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear. Arrangements by Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, Smyrna.
