CHESTERTOWN, Md. - John Morland Spence III, of Chestertown, died of cancer Saturday, March 29, 2008, at his home. He was 75.

A Baltimore native, he was the son of the late John Morland Spence Jr., M.D., and the late Gretchen Woodall Spence.

He married the former Betty Hardy of Baltimore in 1966.

Mr. Spence retired in 1993 as professor emeritus from the University of South Carolina College of Social Work in Columbia, S.C., where he taught for 22 years.

He was a graduate of Gilman School, Washington and Lee University, and the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Work.

Upon retirement he moved with his wife to McLean, Va., and later to Chestertown on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

In Columbia, Mr. Spence was an active board member of the Congaree Girl Scouts Council and a member of St. Martin's in the Field Episcopal Church, where he was a lay reader.

More recently, he was an active member of St. Paul's Parish Kent in Chestertown, where he served on the finance and search committees.

He was on the board of the Community Food Pantry and volunteered with the Chester Valley Mediation Service.

He was keenly interested in literature, history and sports, and enjoyed participation in Washington College's Academy of Lifelong Learning. He deeply loved his family.

Mr. Spence is survived by his wife of 42 years, Betty; his two daughters, Scarlett Spence of Bethlehem, Pa., and Anne Spence and her husband Robert, of Greenville, S.C.; a sister, Pamela Spence of Richmond, Va.; and two grandchildren, Katherine and Rebecca, both of Greenville.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Kent County.

Interment is private.

Instead of flowers, contributions in his name may be made to the Community Food Pantry, P.O. Box 346, Chestertown, MD 21620; or to St. Paul's Parish, Kent, 7579 Sandy Bottom Road, Chestertown, MD 21620; or the charity of your choice.
