
TEMPLE HILLS, Md. - John Hamlin Spies, originally of Easton, Md., and later of Temple Hills, Md., passed away Friday, Apr. 7, 2017, at Kent General Hospital, in Dover.
Mr. Spies, known as Butch to his family and his many friends, was born Mar. 18, 1939, in Easton, Md., to the late Elmer L. Spies and Doris L. Pardoe Spies.
Butch served in the United States Air Force for four years. Later, he was general manager of a Mazda dealership in the Temple Hills, Md., area, where he spent most of his life. After his retirement, he stayed active by mentoring others with his acquired knowledge and experience. Butch was an avid sports fan and enjoyed the Redskins, Washington Capitals, and Atlanta Braves. When younger, he enjoyed golfing. At one time, Butch was the owner of a harness race horse and enjoyed watching it train and race at Rosecroft Raceway. But Butch's favorite past time was spending time surrounded by family and friends.
In addition to his parents and brothers, Elmer, Tom, and Howard, he was preceded in death by granddaughter, Chrissy Ellis.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Irmgard Wyzisk Spies, of Temple Hills, Md.; children, Jennifer Lee Veres (Peter), of Odenton, Md., Delores Kloy, of Richmond, Va., Linda Lisowski (Joseph), of Richmond, Va., Sharon Tucker, of Charlestown, S.C., and Donna Youmans (Charles), of Tracys Landing, Md.; siblings, Alfred Spies (Celeste), of Delmar, Dorothy Schauber and Shirley Dalton, both of Dover; grandchildren, Tonia, Bryan, Daniel, Peter, Zef and John; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was much beloved and will be greatly missed.
Memorial services will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, Apr. 11, 2017, at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Rt.10), Dover. Friends may call one hour prior.
