LINCOLN - John D. "Jack" Mills passed away suddenly on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2018 at home.
Jack was born in Milford, the son of the late James E. and Catherine Susan (Baker) Mills. He was a graduate of Milford High School Class of 1968. Jack joined the U.S. Coast Guard right out of high school. Following his time in the Coast Guard, he went to work at King Cole in Milton for a short time before going to work at I.G. Burton in the auto body shop for about 12 years. Jack decided it was time to go into business for himself, so he formed J.D. Mills Construction, working locally installing septic systems. He was a member of the Milford Moose Lodge #2316. He loved animals, all kinds of music, racing and was always working on cars. He enjoyed living on the Mispillion River and taking his pontoon boat out for excursions and "cruises" along the river. He had a mind of his own and didn't mind speaking out. He also was one of the Coffee Shop Boys and could be found sitting with his friends out front of Dolce' along Walnut Street in Milford. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Jimmy Mills.
He is survived by his companion, Joan Johnson; his brother, Albert "Butch" Baker and his companion Nancy; a granddaughter he considered as his own, Vanessa Johnson; an aunt, Fannie Mae Wilkins; a niece, Rachel; and several cousins.
A viewing will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2018 at the Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Avenue, Milford. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the Delaware S.P.C.A., 455 Stanton Christiana Road, Newark, DE 19713. Letters of condolence may be sent and shared with the family at www.loflandandmcknatt.com
