John B. Smith, age 79
DOVER - John B. Smith, age 79, departed this earth suddenly on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, while at Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was born on June 23, 1930, in Bestland, Va., the son of Mr. John Lewis Smith and Estelle Sparks Smith. He joined the United States Air Force on Sept. 22, 1953, and was stationed at several U.S. military bases, both at home and abroad. While stationed at Forbes AFB, in Topeka, Kan., he met, and subsequently married Miss Travies J. Berryman on Aug. 12, 1956. Mr. Smith served this country well as an active duty soldier under seven presidents, ultimately attaining the rank of Chief Master Sergeant and finally retiring at Norton AFB, San Bernardino, Calif., after thirty years and eight days. He was a founding member of the Home of the Brave Veterans Shelter, and served the local community at Kent-Sussex Industries, as well as contributing to local charities and volunteering for Meals on Wheels for several years. He enjoyed watching programs concerning wildlife, history and nature, traveling with his wife and children, and he was very fond of ocean cruises. Mr. Smith was devoted to and was well loved by his family. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Travies J. Smith; his four children and their spouses, Rodney and Judy Smith, Anita and Ralph Robinson, Michele and Nelson Pachot and Kimberly and Corinthian Cuffee. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jason Robinson, Cristina Pachot, Alyssa Pachot, Christopher Smith and Alanna Smith; and a brother, Spurgeon; and sister-in-law, Emma, who both reside in Bestland, Va. Friends may call at Bennie Smith's Funeral Home, located at 717 West Division Street, Dover, between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m., Monday, Nov. 9. Full Military Burial Services will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 10, at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, located at 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the Home of the Brave Foundation, Inc., 6632 Sharps Road, Milford, DE 19963.
