
James Walter Hurd, 84
DOVER - James Walter Hurd passed away, Monday, December 13, 2021, at home.
Jimmy Hurd was born August 3, 1937, in Harrington, Delaware to the late George and Mildred Hurd. Dover raised; he was one of ten children in the Hurd family. He would later go on to graduate from Dover High School. At the age of 14, Jimmy started working for A&P Food market in Dover and then later Superfresh until his retirement in 1991. In addition to his 40 years of working with A&P he served in the Delaware National Guards for 25 years until he received an Honorable Discharge in 1978 as a Sergeant First Class. During that time Jimmy held many roles, he was a Certified Recruiter, served in Signal Command, Artillery and USASTRATCOM. Jimmy also had a lifelong passion for fishing where he not only fished the local beaches, streams, and ponds, but would also make an annual pilgrimage to the Outer Banks in North Carolina with his regular group of friends. After his retirement from work, he got more involved in hunting in which he made countless trips to the Eastern Shore of Virginia to hunt deer, duck, and dove. He would later go on to share these passions with his son and two grandsons. All of which still carry on his love of the outdoors in one form or another. Along with his wife Mary Lou, Jimmy was an outstanding member of the Harrington Fraternal Order of Moose.
In addition to his parents; he was preceded in death by his brother, Joe; and sisters, Mary, Georgeanne, Sara, Grace and Betty Jane.
Jim is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Lou Hurd of Dover; their son, J.B. Hurd and his wife Susan Whitcomb of Alexandria, Va.; and his two grandsons, Benjamin Hurd of Council, Idaho and Michael Welch and his wife Jessica of Milford, Del. Jimmy is also survived by his brother, Jason Hurd of Franklin, N.C.; and sisters, Clara Mercer of Jackson, N.J., and Laura Ritchter of Canterbury, Del.
Funeral services will be held 12 Noon, Tuesday, December 21, 2021, at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road, (Rt.10), in Dover. Friends may call one hour prior. Interment will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.
In lieu of flowers the family is requesting contributions be made to Delaware Hospice, 911 S. DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901.
