James Russell Kelley Jr.

NEWARK, Del. - James Russell Kelley, Jr. (J.R.), of Newark, passed away peacefully Tues., Dec. 7, 2010, in Heartland Hospice House, Wilmington, surrounded by his loving family. He was 72. J.R. was born Aug. 11, 1938, in Massey, Md., son of the late James Russell Sr. and Evelyn (Palmatory) Kelley. He graduated from Galena High School in 1956. J.R. received an Associates Degree from Goldey Beacom College and received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Wilmington University. He served in the U.S. Air Force from Jan. 1957 to July 1960. During this time he was stationed in New York and Alaska. He worked for Hercules for 29 years and also worked for the State of Delaware, Department of Transportation for 10 years. He was a member of the Capitol Trail Lions Club, served in many offices and was the Cabinet Secretary for District 22-D in 1976-77. J.R. and his family were members of Saint James Episcopal Church for many years. J.R. was a caring, considerate and loving person throughout his life to both friends and family. He always enjoyed and looked forward to visiting his daughter Laurie and her family in Maine throughout the years. His family meant everything to him. In addition to his parents, J.R. is predeceased by his sisters, Rita Savin and Norma Boykin; and a brother Thomas Kelley. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Lois (Fehl) Kelley; his daughter, Laurie and son-in-law, Bruce Widzgowski; and his three beautiful grandchildren, Ryan, Jessica and Zachary all of Camden, Maine. He is also survived by two brothers, Gene Kelley and his wife Ethel of Massey, Md., Donald Kelley and his wife Mary of Smyrna; two sisters, Kay Ollivier of Chestertown, Md., and Eileen Dugan of Wilmington; many nieces; nephews; two sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law; and their families. A visitation will be held on Tues., Dec. 14, at 10 to 11:30 a.m. at DOHERTY FUNERAL HOME, 3200 Limestone Rd, Wilmington, DE 19808. A church service will follow at Noon in St. James Episcopal Church, 2106 St. James Church Rd, Wilmington, DE 19808. Interment will be at 2 p.m. at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE 19701. The family would like to thank the many doctors and nurses in the ICU unit at Christiana Care Health System, Newark, and the staff at Heartland Hospice House, Wilmington, for the wonderful care that was given to J.R.
