JAMES RUDOLPH MIMS

On February 24, 2026, James R. Mims passed away after a brave battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Affectionately known as ‘Rudy’ to family and close friends, James was born on February 3, 1944, in Miami, Florida, to James and Margaret Mims. The eldest of three children and the only son, James graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, where he played on the basketball team and served as class president. A graduate of Morehouse College, where he became a member of Omega Psi Phi, Psi Chapter (1966), and Atlanta University, James established a long and well-respected career at Delaware State University (DSU), where he began as an Assistant Director of Career Planning and Placement, and retired as the Associate Provost, focusing on labor negotiations between the university and teaching staff. Through the years, former students have praised James’ guidance and support in preparing them for their post-graduate careers. He held a strong belief in education, particularly in the options Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) offer young people: excellence, rigorous academics, and lifelong bonds.

A devoted and loving husband to Judith J. Mims and father to Rae Mims, James enjoyed watching NFL games, true crime series, and British mysteries and dramas. He particularly enjoyed The First 48, which featured the Miami Police Department on many episodes as it solved cases. He also took great pride in perfecting his lawn and beamed with pride when neighbors and strangers alike complimented him on his hard work, which included Magnolia trees that had grown far beyond expectations.

James was preceded in death by his parents and his two sisters, Barbara Mims Jackson and Carolyn Mims. He is survived by his wife, Judith, daughter Rae, and an extensive network of cousins and extended family in Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, New York, and Pennsylvania.

A private inurnment service will be conducted at National Harmony Memorial Park at a date to be determined.

Instead of sending flowers, please consider contributing to Parkinson’s research in James’ honor through the Parkinson’s Foundation or the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
