James R. Coker

DOVER - James R. Coker passed away, Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017 at home. Mr. Coker was born Jun. 13, 1935 in Dover to the late "Ted" Coker (James R.) and Mary Elizabeth Durham Coker. He was married to Dorothy Johnson on Dec. 30, 1963. He served in the Delaware Army National Guard. Mr. Coker worked for Winner Ford as an auto mechanic for 35 years. He enjoyed racing ponies and had his own stables, J&J Stables. Mr. Coker and his wife traveled across the country and Canada, making friends at all the tracks where he raced. He attended Immanuel Union United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Johnson Coker; brothers, Carl and Charles Coker; and sister, Glendora Coker. He is survived by his step-son, Albert Durham (Heike) of Dover; stepdaughter, Patsy Tennison of Dover; brothers, Gene Coker (Nancy) of Dover and Larry Coker of Smyrna; sister, Evelyn Townsend (Worth) of Dover; grandchildren, Eric Durham (Nicole) and Brett Durham all of Dover; great-grandchildren, Aidan and Mia Durham; and his caretaker, Shari Mosley. Funeral services will be held 11AM, Friday, Feb. 3, 2017 at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Rt.10), Dover. Friends may call from 9-11. Interment will be in Immanuel Union United Methodist Church Cemetery, Cheswold. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to Immanuel Union United Methodist Church, PO Box 309, Cheswold, DE 19936.
