GEORGETOWN - James L. Marvel, lifelong resident of Georgetown, passed away peacefully on Monday, Feb. 27, 2012, at Country Rest Home. He was 93. Mr. Marvel was born near Georgetown, at home, son of the late Leroy and Edith (Rust) Marvel. James was a teacher and school administrator for the former Georgetown School District. He retired in 1978 as principal of Sussex Central High School. He was a graduate of the University of Delaware in 1940 with a Master's in Education. He was also a local farmer. James was a WWII veteran of the US Army and had served in Greenland and the Philippines. He retired in 1972 as Brigadier General in the Army National Guard. He was a lifelong member of Bethesda United Methodist Church, serving as Sunday School Teacher and Lay Leader. He was civic minded and had served on the Board of Directors for the Delaware Agriculture Museum, Board of Directors for Y.M.C.A., member of the Georgetown Kiwanis Club, serving as Lieutenant Governor for the Capital District, member of the Georgetown Historical Society, with special interest in the Marvel Museum, for which he volunteered many hours. He traveled extensively having visited all fifty states, as well as Europe. James never met a stranger or missed an opportunity to help others in need. In addition to his parents, James is preceded in death by a brother, Stanley W. Marvel. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Anna (Keene) Marvel; daughters and sons-in-law, Carole and Ted Palmer of Milton, Monta and Jack Kutchen of Salisbury, Md., and Melinda and Gayle Gulick of Aiken, S.C.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be 2 p.m., Saturday, March 3, 2012, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market Street, Georgetown, with visitation after noon. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Georgetown. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Bethesda United Methodist Church, 24619 Dupont Blvd., Georgetown, DE 19947.
