CAMBRIDGE — When IRONFEST in downtown Cambridge had to be canceled because of potentially dangerous weather conditions as a result of Hurricane Joaquin, a lot of planning went out the window. Cambridge Main Street and RAR Brewing immediately got back on the phone and not only managed to pull the event back together for this Saturday, but they may have managed to pull off a better IRONFEST.

IRONFEST is a locally-crafted street event featuring local music, food and fun in conjunction with the second running of IRONMAN Maryland, one of only 12 full-distance IRONMAN triathlons in North America, which was also canceled on Oct. 3.

“We had a great music line-up scheduled for IRONFEST, which all went out the window when Joaquin approached and made conditions unsuitable for IRONMAN,” said Cambridge Main Street Executive Director Brandon Hesson. “This community really rallied behind the triathlon, and as a result, it will be the first-ever IRONMAN endurance event to successfully be rescheduled.

“Pulling off a street party is pretty easy by comparison,” joked Mr. Hesson.

As originally planned, IRONFEST will feature an outdoor lounge complete with beer, food and other adult beverages. McReady’s Hearth and Home will provide the outdoor furniture and fire pits. RAR Brewing will provide the beer and beverages at an outdoor bar, as well as the RAR Main Stage which will have live music from 5-10 p.m. featuring Eastern Shore musicians Bobby Reed, Heavy Fred and the Justin Ryan Band.

In addition, the event will host its first Beer Mile, where teams of four will compete for a trophy. Each participant will begin at the intersection of Gay and Race streets, run to Muir Street and back and then drink a beer before their next teammate is allowed to leave on the same run. At the end, each team will have run close to a mile, and one team will enjoy bragging rights and a trophy at the first ever Cambridge Beer Mile. “We had been kicking around this idea of a Beer Mile for a few months, but most of our events are full-blown street events with a lot going on. It isn’t conducive to a race,” said Mr. Hesson.

The idea was put on the back burner until a group of triathletes held their own impromptu Beer Mile race within hours of IRONMAN Maryland originally being postponed.

“We saw those people having a blast on what could have been a terrible day for them, and we started the conversation again,” said Mr. Hesson. “For IRONFEST, because of the way things are laid out, we have a whole block of Race Street that no one is using. We’re hoping to have a fun event, while also generating some excitement up and down the entire block so businesses there get some foot traffic also.”
