MILTON - Ira R. Truitt, 89, of Milton, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010, at his home in Milton. Ira was a beloved Sussex Countian with an astonishing career of having served nearly 40 years as a rifleman in the Combined Region 4, VFW Honor Guard, participating as a volunteer in hundreds and hundreds of funerals of veterans receiving Military Honors. He is survived by his daughter, Darlene "Joy" Smith, and her husband Leslie; his brother, Melvin; sisters, Mary Alice Mumford, Janet K. Ketterman, and Loretta; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren, many extended family members, and friends and neighbors and all those who he claimed as his fellow comrades in the VFW. A Celebration of Ira's Life will be 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 19, at Watson Funeral Home in Millsboro, where friends may call for one hour prior. Interment will be in Carey's Cemetery, where Ira will receive full military honors by his colleagues from Region 4 Honor Guard. Arrangements by Watson Funeral Home.
