CAMBRIDGE – Voters from the recent Taste of Cambridge Crab Cook-Off largely agreed on the best dish on their Peoples’ Choice ballots, but disagreed in some of the core categories, making for a trio of awards for Cambridge Eateries and its Main Street businesses. The ballots from 900 ticket holders were tallied after Taste of Cambridge on July 11, and Water’s Edge Grill – on the grounds of the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay – earned itself a clean sweep after taking both the Peoples’ Choice and Judges’ Choice Best in Show for its crab cake. Cambridge Eateries restaurants The High Spot, Stoked and Black Water each earned a Peoples’ Choice distinction. “It’s always fun to see where the Peoples’ Choice vote falls,” said Executive Director Brandon Hesson. “The tastes of five judges can vary so widely no matter how experienced they are. Imagine how the tastes of 900 people can change. I think this year, it was fun to see everyone agree on the best dish, but then see so many close scores and different winners in the individual categories.” The only repeat winners from Judges’ Choice and Peoples’ Choice were Water’s Edge and Katie Mae’s Country Shoppe, which swept the Maryland Vegetable Crab Soup category. By winning the Judges’ Choice Best in Show on July 11, Water’s Edge Grill earned itself a spot in the World Food Championships in Kissimmee, Fla. The bakery and coffee shop Black Water edged out Judges’ Choice winner Blue Point Provision Co. with a cheddar and jalapeno biscuit covered in crab gravy in the Crab specialty category. Stoked made a Southwest crab dip to take the Peoples’ Choice honors over Judges’ Choice winner Portside Seafood Restaurant. In the closest outcome of them all, The High Spot won the Peoples’ Choice cream of crab soup category by only two votes over Judges’ Choice favorite Jimmie & Sook’s Raw Bar and Grill. “We were a little slower getting the results out this year because cream of crab soup was so close,” said Mr. Hesson. “Those votes needed to be recounted two times by different people to make sure we had the tally correct. These restaurants put a lot of time and energy into this event, and it’s only fair that we put an equal amount of time and energy into making sure our information is accurate.” Taste of Cambridge Crab Cook-Off is an annual event which just completed its 11th year, and helps Cambridge Main Street raise funds to continue its mission of economic revitalization in the commercial center of Cambridge.
