WYOMING - Howard William Papen, of Wyoming, passed away on June 30, 2011, in the Courtland Manor Nursing Home. He was 97. Howard was born on April 9, 1914, in West Patterson, N.J., to John E. and Elizabeth (Milldenburger) Papen. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia J. (Rosania) Papen; his parents, John and Elizabeth Papen; and his brothers, John and George Papen, with whom he established Papen Farms, Inc., in 1952, in Dover. He is survived by his daughter, Lucie Hastings and her husband Andrew of Dover; his son, Christopher Papen of Smyrna; three grandchildren, Michelle Mansuzak and husband Charles, Howard Hastings and his wife Kim, and Amanda Powell and husband James, all of Dover; and five great-grandchildren, Kayla, Kira, and Kole Mansuzak and Audrey and Corinne Hastings. He is also survived by his devoted care giver, Wanda Young, of Lincoln. Howard was a veteran of World War II having served in Burma in the Army. Following which, he became very active in farming in Washington Valley, N.J. In 1952, the entire Papen Family moved to Dover, and established Papen Brothers Produce. He was active in the community, having served on the Board of the United Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Growers, Farm Bureau, Farmers Bank Commission, Blue Cross Blue Shield Board, and the Kent County Planning Committee. In his younger life he was an avid reader and enjoyed watching baseball. Services will be on Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at the Wyoming United Methodist Church. Friends may call at 10 a.m. with services at 11 a.m. Burial to follow at the Lakeside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kent County SPCA or the Wyoming United Methodist Church. Arrangements by Trader Funeral Home, 12 Lotus Street, Dover.
