RESPONSES TO QUESTION OF THE WEEK

How can homelessness be solved?

Posted

On Thursday, Gov. Matt Meyer announced the launch of the Delaware Interagency Collaborative to End Homelessness. His goal is to reduce overall homelessness by 50% and to end it for youth within five years. What steps do you think the state should take?

  • Reopen mental health institutions. Hold parents responsible for their children. No welfare without work. Full employment. Stop voting for progressives like Matt Meyer. — Gene Hansen
  • Maybe stop housing illegal immigrants first. — Hank Vetta
  • Unfortunately, it can’t be solved, no matter how hard we try. The person must want to get better and get off the streets. The panhandlers actually are doing quite well, with individuals enabling them by giving donations of money. And we do have a great number of homeless people who want to be left alone. They want no help. But there is a small amount of those who not only need our help, they want it. We need to have many organizations and churches making sure they are fed and clean. And offering types of housing is a great start. And just plain being respectful to these people, instead of judging. — Denise Bella
  • Provide affordable, safe housing for lower-income families. — Kaye Bennett
  • It can’t be solved. There will always be homelessness. Some just choose that, and there’s nothing you can do about it. — Bob Hice
  • The illegal immigrants take precedent over the homeless population. Georgetown proved this to me 30 years ago, and it’s still true to this day. — Jeff Grzeszczak
  • Well, seeing how the prices of everything just keep going up, including rent and utilities, among other things, I’d say there isn’t much that can be done, unfortunately. And, unfortunately, it will probably only get worse. — Christopher Joyce
  • End property taxes, so people stop losing their houses. — Howard Brobst
  • Ask the homeless. They know best. — Robert Rowe
  • The Democratic way is to throw money at a problem that never works. Keep an eye on the funds and see where they go. — Rick Kerchevall
  • I have been homeless since 2022, and the rent is too damn high. It needs to be back to where it was, $650 a month. — Craig Carter
  • Tackle mental health and education, as well as parental education. Just because you gave birth does not automatically mean you know how to raise a balanced human being. What people don’t seem to understand is that the drugs we have now on the streets are not the same as 40 years ago. I am tired of the “They made a choice” answer. Yes, they did, so does that mean society should just abandon them? Obviously, the programs they have now are not working and need an overhaul, considering what current science and studies show about why a person becomes addicted in the first place. — Viviana Matthews
  • From the things I hear, there’s a lot of homelessness due to drug use. The president seems to be making some headway with keeping as much as possible from coming across our borders, but there’s already so much here, and it seems as though it’ll always find its way here. Not sure how you solve it. People make the first decision to start doing it. — Mike Bodine
