High School Roundup: Knights top Jaguars in baseball

Brendan Anderson pitched a complete-game four-hitter as Sussex Central High knocked off Appoquinimink, 4-2, in a non-conference baseball matchup on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights (5-0) scored twice in the second inning before adding two more in the top of the seventh to build a 4-1 advantage.

T.J. Morris, who doubled, and Camden Keeler both drove in second-inning runs for Central. The Knights also got out of a jam in the fourth by turning a 6-4-3 double play.

Delmar 9, Delmarva Christian 4: Aaron Rhodes collected three doubles to pace the Wildcats to the non-conference victory.

Delmar was trailing 1-0 when it scored six runs in the fourth to take control. Jack Ford also had multiple hits with Joshua Rodriguez striking out five in four innings.

Riley Culver had two hits and an RBI for the Royals.

Boys’ lacrosse

Polytech 9, Dover 3: Sam Slater netted four goals and a pair of assists, including the 100th point of his career, as the Panthers picked up the Henlopen North win.

Caden Reed added three goals and an assist while Bret Nowakowski and Alexander Szell also scoring goals. Zack Waski picked up 12 groundballs.

Zachary Brown scored twice for the Senators with Tyir Trott adding a goal and assist.

Caesar Rodney 13, Indian River 10: The Riders built a 9-2 halftime lead before downing the Indians.

Patrick Craig (4 goals, 4 assists), Ethan Reid (3 goals, 2 assists) and Ryan Carey (1 goal, 5 assists) paced CR (3-0). Brendan Wark added two goals with Jakob Buxton making 21 saves.

Girls’ lacrosse

St. Mary’s, Md. 15, Cape Henlopen 6: The Vikings trailed only 7-5 at halftime before St. Mary’s ran off eight of the game’s final nine goals.

Ella Rishko netted three goals, Emily Monigle had two and Kelly Bragg had the other for Cape, which had a 29-game winning streak snapped. Destiny Kusen made 14 saves as the Vikings were out-shot, 29-16.

Newark Charter 9, Dover 7: The Patriots out-scored the Senators, 7-3, in the second half to rally for the non-conference victory.

Kyleigh Dill tallied five goals with Ashtyn Torbert adding the other two.

Softball

Sussex Tech 5, William Penn 3: Winning pitcher Kylie Kruger threw a six-hitter with six strikeouts in the Ravens’ non-conference win.

Kruger, Megan Sterling, and Jaya Shaub all had hits for Sussex Tech with Laniya Lewis scoring two runs. Sussex Tech led 5-1 after scoring three runs in the fifth.
