Herman F. Black

MILTON - Herman F. Black passed away on Friday, Aug. 12, 2011, comfortably at his home surrounded by his family. He was 84. Herman was born in Milton, the son of the late Joseph L. Black and Amanda (Johnson) Black. Graduated from Milton High School in 1944. He was a descendent of Milton's prolific ship builders. He was a self-employed insurance broker for 30 years in Newark, before retiring in 1984. He was a member of the Goshen United Methodist church in Milton, as well as attending St. Johns United Methodist Church in Seaford. He was a past president of the Milton Cemetery Improvement Company, former member of the 36th Republican District, and a member of Endeavor Masonic Lodge #17 A.F. and A.M. He was also a past president of the Shawnee Country Club, and past director of the Milton Historical Society. He also served his country in the United States Army and the Merchant Marines. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Martin Black. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Emily (Clendaniel) Black; son, Christopher Black and his wife Suzanne of Seaford; one brother, Joseph Black IV of Milton; two sisters, Margaret Rodney of Milton, and Mary Pritchett of Lewes; and three grandchildren, Nathaniel Black, Sean Hubbard, and Emily Hubbard. Funeral Services will be 1 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton, where friends may call after noon. Interment will be in Goshen Methodist Cemetery, Milton.
