COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Michael Locksley is out as Maryland football coach. The university announced Locksley’s exit Wednesday, four days after the Terrapins lost at home to Rutgers for their fifth straight defeat. Co-defensive coordinator Aazaar Abdul-Rahim takes over as interim coach. Locksley was seven games into his eighth season at the helm. He led the Terps to three straight bowl victories from 2021-23, but since then Maryland is 10-21 in two-plus seasons. Maryland blew a 10-point halftime lead in a 37-30 homecoming loss to Rutgers. Locksley went 38-49 at Maryland, not including a stint as interim coach in 2015.
UNDATED (AP) — Beware, Miami, when Pittsburgh comes to town Saturday. The No. 1 team in The Associated Press Top 25 has lost to unranked opponents two straight weeks. Oklahoma knocked off Texas and then Auburn upset Georgia. Unranked teams are 9-198 against No. 1s since 2000. That's according to Sportradar. The only other year No. 1 teams lost twice to non-Top 25 opponents over that span was 2007. Auburn is one of two schools with two wins over No. 1s as an unranked team since 2000. The other is Texas A&M.
UNDATED (AP) — College football fans should get a chance to catch their breath Saturday. Week 8 doesn’t set up to be nearly as upside down as Week 7. There were six Top 25 matchups last week and five of the top seven teams lost on the same day in a regular season for the first time in the 90 years of The Associated Press poll. This week there are just two Top 25 matchups with No. 7 Mississippi at No. 19 Texas and No. 14 Houston at No. 10 Utah. There also is a new No. 1 team in Miami.
UNDATED (AP) — The Indiana Hoosiers started this week like every one in the Curt Cignetti era — breaking down the tape from their previous game, making corrections and studying the next opponent. This time, though, it's different. For the first time in 23 games, the sixth-ranked Hoosiers are trying to rebound from a loss. And while the stoic coach doesn’t get enamored with numbers, he understands how tough it will be for his players to turn the page on the 19-15 loss to then-No. 4 Ohio State on Saturday. He also knows that’s what it will take to avoid losing back-to-back games for the first time during his three-year tenure.
UNDATED (AP) — Ohio State coach Ryan Day says quarterback Julian Sayin is out indefinitely after injuring his throwing arm against Indiana. Day is preparing for the possibility that Sayin might miss the rest of the season. The Buckeyes are on a bye week after their 19-15 victory over Indiana. Day and his staff are evaluating whether Luke Fahey or Tavien St. Clair will start against Southern California on October 31. Fahey has been ahead recently, but both will get more practice reps. Day emphasizes the need for the team to adapt and step up, recalling past successes with backup quarterbacks.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Oregon coach Dan Lanning said he’s still gathering information about the arrest of wide receiver Evan Stewart and that appropriate action will be taken. Stewart was arrested on charges of driving under the influence early Sunday, following the Ducks’ come-from-behind 17-14 victory over Nebraska on Saturday night. Stewart was booked into Springfield Municipal Jail, according to the Springfield Police Department.
UNDATED (AP) — South Carolina is ranked No. 1 in The Associated Press preseason Top 25 women's basketball poll. The Gamecocks received 23 first-place votes from a 31-member national media panel. UConn, Southern California, Duke and Michigan round out the top five. This marks the fifth time in seven years that Staley's team has been ranked No. 1 in the preseason. South Carolina will face five ranked teams in the first month, including UConn, USC and Duke. UConn, which lost to South Carolina in the Final Four last season, garnered six first-place votes. USC picked up the other two.
