UNDATED (AP) — Florida's Thomas Haugh and Michigan State's Jeremy Fears Jr. highlight the preseason AP All-America team. Fears received 57 votes from a 58-person media panel and Haugh earned 56. Vanderbilt guard Tyler Tanner received 43 votes, Illinois forward David Mirkovic had 24 and Arizona big man Motiejus Krivas 17 to round out the team.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Oklahoma State women's basketball team is gearing up for a season of high expectations, thanks in part to the arrival of high-profile transfers Liv McGill from Florida and Audi Crooks from Iowa State. The Cowgirls are the pick to win the Big 12 Conference by the league's coaches. Oklahoma State coach Jacie Hoyt says this is her most talented roster yet. The Cowgirls haven't won a conference championship since 1991, but Hoyt has turned things around with back-to-back successful seasons. McGill was the only player in the nation to average at least 20 points, six rebounds and six assists last season, and Crooks is a two-time All-American.
UNDATED (AP) — Beware, Miami, when Pittsburgh comes to town Saturday. The No. 1 team in The Associated Press Top 25 has lost to unranked opponents two straight weeks. Oklahoma knocked off Texas and then Auburn upset Georgia. Unranked teams are 9-198 against No. 1s since 2000. That's according to Sportradar. The only other year No. 1 teams lost twice to non-Top 25 opponents over that span was 2007. Auburn is one of two schools with two wins over No. 1s as an unranked team since 2000. The other is Texas A&M.
UNDATED (AP) — College football fans should get a chance to catch their breath Saturday. Week 8 doesn’t set up to be nearly as upside down as Week 7. There were six Top 25 matchups last week and five of the top seven teams lost on the same day in a regular season for the first time in the 90 years of The Associated Press poll. This week there are just two Top 25 matchups with No. 7 Mississippi at No. 19 Texas and No. 14 Houston at No. 10 Utah. There also is a new No. 1 team in Miami.
UNDATED (AP) — Texas Tech is again undefeated halfway through the regular season. The No. 8 Red Raiders have just gotten to 6-0 a bit differently from a year ago when they were first-time Big 12 champions and made the College Football Playoff. Not all of their wins have been lopsided like their school-record 12 wins last year by an average margin of nearly 35 points. With Texas Tech, No. 2 BYU and No. 10 Utah, the Big 12 has three 6-0 teams for the first time since 2015. That trio accounts for half of the six remaining undefeated Bowl Subdivision teams.
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia's football team has a productive offense and a terrible defense. That has added up to four straight games in which the Mountaineers and their opponents have combined for 1,000 yards. According to Sportradar, that's the longest streak of 1,000-yard games among Bowl Subdivision teams since 2020. West Virginia is 1-3 over that four-game stretch. Its defense ranks last nationally in passing yards allowed and next-to-last in total defense. That has overshadowed some great performances by quarterback Mike Hawkins Jr. and running back Cam Cook. Hawkins leads the nation in rushing touchdowns and is third in total offense. Cook is fifth nationally in rushing yards.
UNDATED (AP) — The family of Bob Huggins says the retired basketball coach has a “progressive cognitive condition” that has started to impact his memory and aspects of his daily life. Huggins’ family released a statement Wednesday ahead of the 73-year-old’s induction into the Cincinnati Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday night. The family says it kept the matter private over the past several months but believes now is an appropriate time to share the news. Huggins' career included 16-year stints each at Cincinnati and West Virginia, where he took both schools to the Final Four. He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Arizona Wildcats coach Tommy Lloyd expressed his frustration over forward RJ Godfrey's eligibility issues during the Big 12's media summit Wednesday. Godfrey's basketball future depends on a Georgia court decision. The NCAA's new eligibility rules allow five years of competition, but they don't apply to the high school class of 2022. Godfrey played two seasons at Clemson and one at Georgia before returning to Clemson. A Georgia judge initially cleared him to play, but the decision was stayed. Lloyd argues that it's unfair for Godfrey to miss out due to his graduation year. No. 5 Arizona, coming off a Final Four trip, opens the season against No. 22 UCLA on Nov. 2.
