UNDATED (AP) — Texas Tech is again undefeated halfway through the regular season. The No. 8 Red Raiders have just gotten to 6-0 a bit differently from a year ago when they were first-time Big 12 champions and made the College Football Playoff. Not all of their wins have been lopsided like their school-record 12 wins last year by an average margin of nearly 35 points. With Texas Tech, No. 2 BYU and No. 10 Utah, the Big 12 has three 6-0 teams for the first time since 2015. That trio accounts for half of the six remaining undefeated Bowl Subdivision teams.
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia's football team has a productive offense and a terrible defense. That has added up to four straight games in which the Mountaineers and their opponents have combined for 1,000 yards. According to Sportradar, that's the longest streak of 1,000-yard games among Bowl Subdivision teams since 2020. West Virginia is 1-3 over that four-game stretch. Its defense ranks last nationally in passing yards allowed and next-to-last in total defense. That has overshadowed some great performances by quarterback Mike Hawkins Jr. and running back Cam Cook. Hawkins leads the nation in rushing touchdowns and is third in total offense. Cook is fifth nationally in rushing yards.
UNDATED (AP) — Deion Sanders takes pride in one thing the Colorado Buffaloes aren’t doing in the midst of a four-game skid and that's playing the blame game. That sort of toxicity, the coach pointed out, has been cleaned out of the locker room. Sanders maintained the Buffaloes haven't fractured but remain fixated on changing their course of direction. The Buffaloes are 13 1/2-point underdogs Saturday against quarterback Drew Mestemaker and the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Colorado ranks last in the league on offense with 19.5 points a game. The Buffaloes are coming off a 27-24 loss to a Utah team that's No. 10 in the nation.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas coach Bill Self was in the spotlight at the Big 12's basketball media day Tuesday, when the buzz centered on Trey Kaufman-Renn, a former Purdue star who joined the Jayhawks this week. He was granted eligibility after a court ruling and is now practicing with the team. Kansas also welcomed back Tre White and Melvin Council Jr., who were cleared to play another season. There’s uncertainty about their eligibility, but Self is preparing as if they will be a part of the team. Arizona is favored to win the Big 12, with Houston and Kansas close behind, though things could change in an era of roster uncertainty.
UNDATED (AP) — South Carolina is ranked No. 1 in The Associated Press preseason Top 25 women's basketball poll. The Gamecocks received 23 first-place votes from a 31-member national media panel. UConn, Southern California, Duke and Michigan round out the top five. This marks the fifth time in seven years that Staley's team has been ranked No. 1 in the preseason. South Carolina will face five ranked teams in the first month, including UConn, USC and Duke. UConn, which lost to South Carolina in the Final Four last season, garnered six first-place votes. USC picked up the other two.
UNDATED (AP) — Florida starts the men's college basketball season ranked No. 1 in the preseason AP Top 25. Michigan State, Texas, Tennessee, Virginia and Houston finish out the top 10,
