UNDATED (AP) — Exactly 68 schools reached or came within 5 percent of reaching the $20.5 million revenue-sharing cap over the first season of a system that allowed the schools to pay their players directly. That's the same number of athletic programs in the four biggest conferences in Division I. The College Sports Commission says 319 schools opted in to the arrangement that allowed them to pay players. Of those, 307 doled out $1.77 billion in revenue. The CSC did not divulge the identities of the 68 schools who went all-in, though it was widely expected that all Power Four schools would.
UNDATED (AP) — Cincinnati has gone from a five-game losing streak to finish last season to a chance for a 5-0 start this year. The Bearcats play at 3-1 Arizona in a late-night Big 12 matchup. Three of the Big 12's five ranked teams also play Saturday. No. 10 BYU is at TCU, No. 12 Texas Tech goes to Colorado, and No. 20 Houston hosts UCF. Cincinnati was last 5-0 in 2021. The Bears were then still in the American and went on to become the only non-major conference team to make the four-team version of the College Football Playoff.
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — BYU coach Kalani Sitake and the No. 10 Cougars are gearing up for a nine-game stretch after an early open date. They play at TCU on Saturday night. The Cougars, who missed the College Football Playoff last season as Big 12 runner-ups, could start 4-0 for the third consecutive year, something they have never done. TCU is trying to avoid its first 0-2 start in the Big 12 since 2013. The 2-2 Horned Frogs struggled with penalties and turnovers in their losses. BYU beat TCU 44-13 last year, after a 44-11 loss in its last trip in Fort Worth in 2023.
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona State placed hockey coach Greg Powers on administrative leave as the school investigates the collapse of a player during an outdoor workout. Powers won't join the team for its season opener at Lindenwood on Friday in the wake of the Aug. 20 collapse of defenseman Matthew Mayich. Assistant coach Mike Corbett will lead the team against Lindenwood and an interim coach will be named soon. The 21-year-old Mayich collapsed during an outdoor workout on the first day the NCAA allows official activities. He suffered from external heat stroke that reduced flow of oxygen to his brain and is unlikely to recover, according to family attorney Rob Carey.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Jalon Daniels didn’t hear his name called during the NFL draft like 10 other quarterbacks. The undrafted rookie— not No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza or first-round pick Ty Simpson — will be the first of his class to start a game. The winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-3) are turning to Daniels because Baker Mayfield dislocated his right thumb last week. The Buccaneers signed Daniels to compete for the No. 3 job behind Mayfield and veteran Jake Browning, who had success filling in for Joe Burrow in Cincinnati. But Daniels outplayed Browning in training camp and earned the backup job.
