SEAFORD - Herbert W. Dayton, age 76, of Seaford, beloved husband of Doris Lowe Dayton for 57 years, devoted father and proud grandfather, born Feb. 28, 1934, in Cambridge, Md., son of the late Herbert Carl Dayton and Agnes McWilliams Dayton, passed away peacefully with his family by his side Friday, Jan. 21, 2011. In addition to his wife he is survived by three children, Pamela Smawley and husband, Mason of Ellendale, Julie Dayton of Richmond, Va., and Brian Dayton and wife Rita; and grandchildren, Allison and Mikayla of Seaford. Herb's service to the community included serving on the Laurel Town Council, Mayor of Laurel, Laurel Jaycees President, President of the Laurel Alumni Association and the National Guard of Delaware. He enjoyed a 33-year career in real estate, and his many business ventures including several retail businesses and oil broker. Herb was a talented drummer starting his own band in high school and playing "Big Band" music around the area for the next 20 years. He enjoyed golf, dancing, and traveling, and he loved the Dodgers. He was preceded in death by his parents and two granddaughters, Bree and Brooke Smoot. A Celebration of his life will be held at the Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home, 700 West Street Laurel, DE 19956, on Feb. 5, 2011, at 1 p.m., where a visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Pastor Ken Deusa will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Laurel Alumni Association Endowment Fund, PO Box 382 Laurel, DE 19956; or Centenary Methodist Church c/o Food Pantry, 200 West Market St. Laurel, DE 19956.
