Herbert E. Hughes Jr.

DOVER - Herbert E. Hughes Jr. passed away Aug. 1, 2010, at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore after a lengthy illness. He was born in Dover, Nov. 2, 1934, son of Herbert E. Hughes, Sr. and Mary Emily Saxton Hughes. He was a past officer of the Dover Elks Lodge #1903, past president of Kent County Archaeology Society and past commander of Flotilla 3, Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Emily Hughes; sister, Judith Stachecki; and parents-in-law, Howard (Bob) and Thelma Willis of Wyoming. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Nancy Lee Willis Hughes; daughters, Patricia (Patti) Williams and husband Tom of Charlottesville, Va., and Meredith (Merri) Greer and husband Guy of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren, Cheryl Williams Abe of Norfolk, Va., Sara Williams Sumrell of Chesterfield, Va., and Tom Williams of Charlottesville, Va., Mallory Hughes Greer, Ryan Willis Greer and Cameron Redd Greer, all of Charlotte, N.C.; sister, Georgia Lee DeMarie, of Ocean View; nephew and care-giver, Michael Cox; and 11 nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation for the professional and compassionate care from Dr. Joann Fields, Dr. Aunarg Maheshwari, and Dr. Larry Fitzpatrick, the physicians and nursing staff of Sisters of Mercy Medical Center. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, 2010, at Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wyoming United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 389, Wyoming, DE 19934; Kent County SPCA, 32 Shelter Circle, Camden, DE 19934. Letters of condolences can be sent via www.pippinfuneralhome.com.
