Henry R. Dierker Sr.

MASSEY, MD - Henry R. Dierker, Sr. "Big Henry", of Massey, MD, died April 23, 2011 in Chester River Hospital. Henry was born on Jan. 25, 1922 in Rock Hall, son of the late Herman H. and Minnie Grulkey Dierker. He was raised in Skinner's Neck and at the age of 12 his family moved to Baltimore. He returned to Kent County in 1942 making Massey his home where he farmed and raised dairy cows. In 1986 he converted to small grain farming. His memberships include Shrewsbury Parish Church, North Kent Parish- St. Clements where he served on the vestry and was a lay reader, also the Maryland Farm Bureau and the United Farmers Organization. Henry was the winner of the National Corn Growers Association for the State of Maryland in 1967. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Lillian Koch Dierker in 2000; a great-grandson, Zachary Spies; a brother and four sisters. Big Henry is survived by his son, Henry R. Dierker, Jr. and his wife Linda of Massey; and his daughter, Karen D. Spies and her husband Donald "Bunk" of Easton, Md.; a brother, Arthur E. Dierker of Rock Hall; five grandchildren, Henry R. "Richie" Dierker III, Jason Spies, Pamela Spies Knopp, Shelley Daniels, and Jeffery Turner, Jr.; and six great-grandchildren, Madison Spies, Michael Dierker, Olivia and David Daniels and J.T. and Kayle Turner. Friends may call on Wednesday, April 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St. Galena, MD. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 28, 2011 at 2: 00 p.m. in Shrewsbury Parish Church, Kennedyville, Md. Burial in Massey Cemetery. Memorials may be offered to Shrewsbury Parish Church or the Karen Spies Nursing & Excellence Award Scholarship in c/o the funeral home. www.galenafuneralhomeofsls.com.
