Hazel Carlson DOVER - Hazel Carlson, age 79, passed away Wednesday, April 28, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer and two debilitating strokes, at Westminster Village, Dover. She was born Wilmington, Del. in 1930 and lived most of her life in Kent County except for 7 years when her husband Dick was transferred to Cary, N.C. in the 1990's. After Dick's retirement they moved back to Kent County. Most recently, due to her deteriorating health, she and Dick moved to Westminster Village. Hazel graduated from John Bassett Moore High School and additionally took business courses at Wesley College. She started a career at International Latex Corp (Playtex) and quickly rose to become the Administrative Assistant to the Vice President of Finance and Administration. Hazel had married Marvin Thompson and later left her position at Playtex to raise their family. After her husband's death she returned to work as the Cancer Registrar at Kent General Hospital where she compiled data on all KGH's cancer patients and submitted the data to the National Tumor Registry. She later married Richard K (Dick) Carlson and had a wonderful life traveling. She was a fun loving person who had a wide circle of friends both in Delaware and North Carolina. She enjoyed sports in High School, and her love of sports continued at Playtex and also as a member of the Colonial Tennis Club and Lifestyles Fitness Center. She loved to travel and travelled all over the US including Hawaii, Alaska, and East Coast to the West Coast as well as Jamaica. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; Marvin Thompson; brothers, Robert, Fred and Paul (Toby) Johnson. Hazel is survived by her husband of 26 years, Richard (Dick) Carlson; daughter, Jennifer Lynn Roy and her husband James; son, Marvin (Thom) Thompson and his companion, Jennifer Corbit; stepson, Derek Carlson and his wife Melanie; her sister, Virginia Seymour and her husband Don; brothers, Stanley Johnson and his wife Barbara, Richard Johnson and his fiancé, Joddie Burchard; and step granddaughters, Ashley and Hanna Roy. A Celebration of life will be held 11 a.m,. Saturday, May 15, 2010 at Wesley United Methodist Church, 209 S. State Street, Dover. Interment will be private.
