DOVER - Harry Oscar Meeks, of Dover, passed away peacefully at Kent General Hospital on Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011. He was 82. Oscar was born Oct. 26, 1928, in Chestertown, Md., to the late Harry S. and Madge Meeks and grew up on the family farm in Betterton, Md. During the Korean War, Oscar served in the United States Army 1st Infantry Division known as the Big Red One as a military police officer. He was also a member of the Honor Guard for President Dwight Eisenhower. After the war Oscar worked civil service at Aberdeen Proving Grounds and later at Dover Air Force Base. He next ventured into real estate before becoming a partner with Harris and Hamby Realtors. Oscar was an officer at Walter L. Fox Post #2 and a member of Betterton Henry Price III Legion Post #246. He was also president of the Edgehill Civic Association and attended church at Trinity Wesleyan. Although Oscar was quite involved with the community nothing gave him greater joy then his children and grandchildren. A summer's day would often find Oscar relaxing on his boat at Turners Creek with his grandchildren. On the way home they would stop for ice cream cones. Oscar also enjoyed watching his grandsons play baseball. He entertained the grandchildren with his piano playing and his fantastic ability to bring a story to life. The grandchildren particularly enjoyed the stories of his MP days in Germany. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, James Timothy Meeks, July 18, 2004. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ann Meeks of Dover; children, Harry O. Meeks, Jr. and his wife Bonnie, Jeffrey Meeks and his wife Michelle, and Richard Meeks and his girlfriend Sharon, all of Dover; and grandchildren, Ryan, Dannette, Jessica, Derek, Rachel, Justin and Haley. Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 7, 2011, at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Rt.10), Dover. Friends may call one hour prior. Interment will be in the Stillpond Cemetery, Maryland. Letters of condolence may be sent, and guestbook signed at www.torbertfuneral.com.
