Harris: Dover church, community center two separate entities

Posted

In response to the Opinion of Tyron Scott (“Did Dover councilman have conflict of interest?”): It is important to understand that the grant application is from the People’s Community Center, a separate and distinct nonprofit from People’s Church of Dover, with its own 501(c)3. Mr. David Anderson was on the community center’s Board of Trustees. He doesn’t attend church at People’s Church and is not a trustee or board member or anything else having to do with the church. All the programs the center offers are not offered by the church. They are offered by a tenant of the church, the community center. All financial records and business of these two entities are purposefully handled transparently and separately.

The winter emergency sanctuary, the feeding program, the free store, the After-School Program and the hoped-for workforce development program are all available at this site because the People’s Church congregation offered three-quarters of its building to be used by and managed by the People’s Community Center, to serve the community and provide support to our neighbors in need.

There was such an emphasis on Anderson being a part of the “church” and that it was the church asking for this money that I felt it important to correct this inaccuracy for both Mr. Scott and anyone else reading his piece.

Thank you.

Sue Harris

Coordinator, People’s Community Center

Dover
