GREENWOOD - Harold Roger Arner, of Greenwood, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thurs., Feb. 24, 2011, after a lengthy illness. He fought a good fight with his illness but now has gone to receive his rewards. He was 82. Many folks called him or knew him as 'Pop Harold'. He was born in Hazleton, Pennsylvania on Sept. 21, 1928. His parents were Roger and Clara Arner and his step-mother, Caroline Arner, who are deceased. Harold proudly served in U.S. Army Paratrooper Division during the Korean War for two years. He dearly loved the flag and what it stands for. Harold worked and retired from DuPont's in Seaford, after 40 years. After retiring there, he painted houses, worked at Comfort Heating as a delivery man, and then at the Methodist Manor House in the maintenance dept. As his health began to decline he spent his time at home using his abilities to entertain the many children and fixing their toys at his wife's daycare business where every child adored him. Harold is one of the founding members of the Denton Wayside Church of Christ in Christian Union for 35 years. There he served as Sunday School Superintendent, Trustee, 1st Elder, Men following Jesus, Camp Treasurer, and often enjoyed playing hymns on his harmonica. His enjoyment was attending Southern Gospel concerts and seeing his many friends and sharing his testimony about Jesus and his vision. He loved animals. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his step-mother; a sister Marion Arner; and his baby son Ronald Harold Arner. He is survived by his devoted wife, Bernice Lare Arner of 55 years; his daughter, Susan who was his nurse caregiver and he was so proud of her; his brothers and sisters, Paul Arner of McDonald, Tenn., Ruth Dennison and husband Bud, of Ooltewah, Tenn., Esther Arner of Takoma Park, Md., John Arner and wife Laura of Pikeville, Tenn., Sarah Rennewanz and husband Darrell of Hartley, Arthur Arner and wife Atsuko of Phoenix, AZ., Ray Arner and wife Sharon of Silver Springs, Md, and Grace Patton and husband Art of Las Vegas, Nev.; many nieces; nephews; cousins; five godchildren whom he dearly loved, Cheryl Dawn Holbrook and husband Jeremy of Circleville, Ohio, Tracey Honess and husband Frank, and Ashley, Jason and Saranna Weaber all of Greenwood; and had two that he specially loved like a daughters, Carol Allman and husband Leland (Bud) of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Christine Weaber and husband Lee of Greenwood. He also leaves to cherish his memories, many daycare families, church families, and friends. He will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wed., March 2, 2011, at Denton Wayside Church, 26993 Shore Hwy, Denton, MD, where friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Church. Rev Leland Allman and Rev. Gordon Hayes will be officiating. Burial will be in Bloomery Cemetery near Federalsburg, MD. Instead of flowers, donation may be made to Denton Wayside Church, c/o Christine Weaber, 13122 Blanchard Road, Greenwood, DE 19950. Arrangements by Fleischauer Funeral Home, Greenwood.
