Get The Scoop at a delightful snack shack in Rock Hall

Eating ice cream on a warm summer day is a delightfully decadent feeling. You’re going to enjoy something sweet and cold just because you want to. And the classic ice cream shack is the place to do it.

When I arrived at Get The Scoop in Rock Hall, Md., I had already been on the road and outdoors for hours. It was unseasonably hot, and here was this small, mint-green cottage of an ice cream shack, with promises of cold temptation.

In fact, it was surrounded by other colorful little buildings. I had stumbled on a small shopping cluster called Rock Hall Village, right next to Main Street and a stone’s throw from even more awesome shops.

I peeked in a few windows, and made a mental note to return because my priority soon became the beautiful banana split sundae that was being handed out of another window to me.

There are so many options at Get The Scoop—with a dozen or so ice creams, depending on the time of year, and even more toppings (including malt mix)—that the smartest option was to let the staff create their version of greatness.

Even today, I get a thrill from scrolling through Get The Scoop’s social media to see their seasonal flavors from months past. Lavender honey. Banana pudding sundae with real fruit and cookie chunks. A “crab feast” themed scoop of sweet cornbread ice cream under a scoop of Old Bay salted caramel ice cream.

In autumn, it’ll be pumpkin spice latte floats and ghostly milkshakes. In winter, look for the hot chocolate floats and velvety Valentine sundae cups. In March, they’ll introduce Andes Mint and Lucky Charms ice cream flavors. At Easter, they feature a popular Cadbury Egg ice cream flavor. For Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, they sell sundae or root beer float gift baskets (take home a freezer-friendly container of ice cream with all the accoutrements on the side).

My own sundae was delightful. Sharing a bench with a mom and her little ones provided extra entertainment. Gazing at the hand-painted mural across the street was the cherry on top.

Rock Hall is a classic waterman’s town on the Chesapeake Bay, so seafood is the name of the game. But after the savory comes the sweet, and Get The Scoop is ready to serve.
