MILLSBORO - Gerald (Gerry) Bunting, formerly of Millsboro, passed away at his home in Norfolk, Va. on Oct. 6, 2018. Born in Lewes he was the son of Alvah and Bertha Mae (Lingo) Bunting and stepson of Charles Vickers.
Growing up in Millsboro meant summers spent at the beach and extended family gatherings. After graduating from Millsboro High School in 1968, Gerry attended Madison College (James Madison University) where he was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity. Following graduation Gerry began teaching at Bayside Middle School in Virginia Beach. During his 37 years at Bayside, he taught geography and civics, was the boys soccer coach and sponsor for the National Junior Honor Society. He was named teacher of the year for Bayside Middle School in 1995.
After retiring in 2010, Gerry became active in Norfolk's Ocean View Civic League, redevelopment in the Ocean View area, and East Beach neighborhood activities. He also volunteered as a reading buddy for 1st and 2nd graders at Ocean View Elementary School.
Gerry is survived by his wife of 38 years, Christy Bunting; his son, Michael Bunting and daughter-in-law Lindsay Bunting of Virginia Beach, Va.; his daughter, Jessica Bunting of Germantown, Md.; and his grandchildren, Laura Bunting, Zachary Bunting, Westley Bunting, and Cale Bunting. He is also survived by his brothers, Ray Bunting (Robin) of Rehoboth Beach and Ron Vickers (Nancy) of Lewes; his niece, Lori Hudson-Stark (David) and children of Tucson, Ariz.; niece Tara Arnold (George) and children; his nephew, Will Vickers of Washington, D.C.; as well as numerous cousins.
Gerry will be remembered for his warm smile, his kindness, his desire to help others, and his ability to make friends wherever he went.
A celebration of life service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11, 2018 at Virginia Beach United Methodist Church with a reception to follow.
