Gary L. Sheets

PRESTON, Md. - Gary Leon Sheets, of Preston, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011, at his home. He was 57. He was born on Aug. 2, 1954, in Chestertown, the son of the late Harold A. Sheets Sr., and Elsie R. Morris Sheets. He graduated from Colonel Richardson High School class of 1972. He was married to Kelly Olson Sheets on Feb. 1, 2001. He was a salesman for Federal Paper for many years. Gary loved his family and enjoyed coaching Colonel Richardson football and softball. He studied karate and instructed Bushin Kai karate for over thirty years. He obtained a sixth degree Black Belt in Bushin Kai karate, and also held a black belt in Aikido, Iaido and Kodachi. He loved playing music and was an avid gardener. He was a member of Union United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School. He later joined Concord United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Kelly Olson Sheets of Preston; a daughter, Stephanie Cooper and her husband Dustin of Pasadena; a step-son, Jason Lord of Preston; three grandchildren, Dustin Cooper Jr., Bella Cooper and Madison Rudder; two sisters, Shirley Mattox of Preston, Donna Towers and her husband Wayne of Cambridge; two brothers, Glenn L. Secrist and his wife Judy of Cordova, and Harold A. Sheets Jr. and his wife Karen of Bridgeville, Del., and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be on Friday, Dec. 2, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Union United Methodist Church in Federalsburg with the Reverend Dave Heistand and the Reverend Jim Michaels officiating. Interment will follow in Greenmount Cemetery in Hillsboro. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Church and one hour prior to the service on Friday.
