WILMINGTON - Frances Hazeltine drew her last breath this Monday evening following a long and loving life. Born Frances Carmella Tartaglio on Aug. 29, 1923, she drew her first breath in her grandmother's home in Wilmington's Little Italy. She was the first child and only daughter of Frank and Mary Tartaglio. Her father called her "The Queen of Lincoln Street" and the nuns of Saint Thomas' Church parochial school hoped she would one day be among their number. They were to be disappointed, because after working for a telephone operator for nearly ten years, she was wooed by Fred Hazeltine after he met her at the Glass Bar in Wildwood. They were married for 54 years before his death in 2006. Frances' first child was her only daughter, Mary Ann, but her heart was broken when she died two days later. She was to have five sons who became the center of her life. Frances and Fred resided in Georgetown for over 50 years. She was variously PTA officer of Georgetown Elementary, parish council member at St. Michael's Church, and it seemed that a year did not go by that she was not a homeroom mother in one of her sons' classrooms. Along with attending every school event and chauffeuring her boys to music lessons or games, she did bookkeeping or whatever else was needed for her husband's business. After her husband's retirement, they spent the winter months in Ft. Myers, Fla., and therefore, developed friends in both Florida and Delaware. In addition to her parents and daughter, she was also preceded in death by a son, F. Michael. She is survived by four children, Frederick E. Hazeltine, Jr. and his wife Michele of Dayton, Md., William A. Hazeltine and his wife Arlene of Wilmington, Perry John Hazeltine and his wife Connie of Lancaster, Pa., and Vincent James Hazeltine and his wife Janet of Ft. Myers, Fla.; a brother, Anthony Tartaglio and his wife June of Wilmington; four grandchildren, Alison, Michael, Emma, and Hannah; and one great-grandchild, Tristan and another on the way. Funeral Services will be 10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 19, 2010, at St. Thomas Catholic Church, 301 N. Bancroft Parkway, Wilmington, where friends may call after 9 a.m. Interment will be Friday at 3 p.m. at the Union Cemetery, Georgetown. Arrangements handled by Short Funeral Services, Georgetown.
