Coverdale, 94 ST. GEORGE'S - Known by her children as the greatest mother in the world, Frances (Sullivan) Coverdale peacefully passed away on Friday morning at the age of 94 after a 12 year battle with Alzheimer's. Born and raised on the eastern shore of Maryland, she was the youngest of three sisters. Her love of horseback riding led to her distinction of becoming the first woman in Maryland to compete in jousting tournaments for which she won awards. After graduating from Blackstone College in Virginia, she married her soulmate, the charmingly ornery Ernest Coverdale. The couple moved to St. George's, Del. and had four beloved children. In 1960, they moved to Pike Creek where they made their home a gathering place for family and friends. A hard-working woman, Frances had a career in the restaurant industry, but always found the time to make exquisite dinners for her family. Her retirement years were spent in the company of loved ones, traveling, spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and tending to her pet rabbits. Frances was welcomed to heaven by her husband, Ernest; son, Jack; and sisters, Helen and Sis. She will be sorely missed by her son, Wayne; daughters and sons-in-law Joan and Dennis Mikell and Debi and John Wray; grandson Jas Wray; and granddaughter, Jaclyn Andress. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Wed., July 24, 2013 at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Rt 10), Dover. Friends may call one hour prior. Interment will be private. In honor of Frances, contributions may be made to the DE Wildlife Rehabilitators Assoc. Bear Station, 1832 Red Lion Rd, Bear, DE 19701 or the Alzheimer's Association.
