The first baby of 2016 started life in the spotlight.

Weighing 7 pounds, 9 ounces and measuring 20 inches, Sophia Ferreira Gonzaga was born at 2:16 a.m. Jan. 1 at Peninsula General Regional Center to proud parents Keila Jorge and Luiz Gonzaga.

β€œIt was a great way to start out the year,” Luiz Gonzaga said.

"It feels good. I mean, I'm so happy. I think it's like the best, best gift ever. I mean, I think it's the best present we have now,” he said.

In celebration, baby Sophia was given a variety of infant items, from toys to blankets. Junior Auxiliary Board President Joanne Jackson gave the items, arranged in a basket, to the parents.

The couple, of Salisbury, also has a 2-year-old son, Kevin.
