DOVER — A Thursday night residential fire at 53 South New Street took about 20 minutes to extinguish and left the home uninhabitable, authorities said.
Three adults were displaced from the two-story, single-family residence and contacted by the American Red Cross.
According to the Dover Fire Department spokesman Michael O’Connor, the fire was contained to the first floor, and the second floor sustained heavy smoke damage.
Neighboring fire departments sent crews to assist with the overhaul, Mr. O’Connor said. Ceilings and walls were pulled down to check for possible fire behind them, he said.
The City of Dover Fire Marshal investigated after the scene was placed under control.
The blaze was reported at 10:01 p.m. and the last personnel returned to the fire department at 1:33 a.m. Friday, officials said.
Mr. O’Connor reported that Duty Officer Assistant Chief Duane Reeder arrived to the scene first and found heavy fire throughout the entire first floor.
Other responding fire companies included Little Creek, Cheswold, and Camden-Wyoming. Kent County paramedics arrived, along with the City of Dover electric, water, and police departments.
