Faust: In Dover, actions speak louder than words

Posted

Over the past several months, Dover City Council and the mayor have expressed concerns about the homeless population of Dover. Enough of the empty speeches and promises, let’s see action.

I have an idea that would show that the mayor and council truly care about all the citizens of Dover, especially those who are less fortunate or homeless.

With all the grants and funds being poured into the downtown development project, how about we invest a portion of them in the following ways?:

  1. Start a medical clinic for the homeless citizens and those who are less fortunate.
  2. Develop a building for homeless individuals to get showers and wash their clothes.
  3. Create a center where the less fortunate can search for work and receive help creating résumés. This resource center could also hand out blankets, sleeping bags, hygiene items and much more.

Have you noticed that the mayor and council have used so much revenue and resources to create a downtown dream that may not come true? However, you have not seen the same amount of enthusiasm when it comes to addressing our homelessness situation.

As I have stated in the past, if you do not address the prostitution issue, the drug issue, gun violence and the homelessness issue, the city will experience more criminal activity, which will eventually spread to the rest of Dover. By action, I mean truly fixing our most critical social concerns and not pushing or forcing them into another section of our town.

This is something we should all think about. Like I stated earlier, actions speak louder than great speeches and new ordinances that could lead to lawsuits against the city.

Let’s hold our council members’ and the mayor’s feet to the fire. Enough of the empty talk, do something that betters the city of Dover for all its citizens.
