FELTON — The Delaware State Police Homicide Unit began a criminal investigation early Monday at the intersection of Hopkins Cemetery and Marshyhope roads, authorities said.

According to Senior Cpl. Jason Hatchell, at approximately 12:30 a.m., troopers responded to the area for a report of a subject lying in a ditch near the road. They discovered a 35-year-old male from Houston with a gunshot wound to his upper body, he said.

The victim was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. His identification is pending notification of kin.

Further investigation determined that the victim’s vehicle broke down in the area, and he utilized a nearby resident’s phone to call for assistance, Cpl. Hatchell said. After returning to his car, a confrontation occurred, and the victim was shot, he added.

Detectives ask anyone with information to contact Detective A. Bluto at 302-741-2859, send a message via the state police Facebook page or contact Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-847-3333.
