Evelyn Yvonne Shanks departed this life on August 16, 2024. She is survived by her sister, Rita Gerwig; children Deborah Griffitts, Gordon Thompson Poet (Cheryl), Joseph Glenn Poet, Chrystie Seeney, and Matthew Shanks (Diane); stepchildren Christy Raughley (Tom) and Debbie Kay Horney (Robbie); grandchildren Jason & Melissa (Debbie), Stephanie & Erick (Tommy), Sheri (Glenn), Lauren, Lydia & Kristen (Christy), and Aaron & Joshua (Debbie Kay); as well as many great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Yvonne was preceded in death by her parents, Medford Thomas, Sr. and Vivian Thomas; her brother, Medford "Plugsy" Thomas, Jr.; her husband, George Franklin Shanks; and granddaughters Lori Poet and Amber Poet (Glenn). Yvonne was born in Grasonville, Maryland on June 22, 1941 and moved to Delaware in the 1970s where she remained for the rest of her life. She held many jobs in her lifetime, including medical caregiving in a retirement home, sewing upholstery, owning and running a consignment store, professional crab picking, driving a school bus, keeping the books for her husband's flooring business, and serving as a lunch lady. No matter what job she held, though, family always came first to Yvonne. She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her. A Celebration of Life will be privately held by the family.
