Evan Hensley

DOVER - Evan Hensley passed away on Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010, in Kent General Hospital. He was born on April 9, 1924, to Evan Hopkins Hensley and Frieda Ziegler Hensley. Raised in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, he attended Ohio Wesleyan University on a track scholarship. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in 1942 and served until 1946 when he returned to OWU, graduating in 1949. Evan took a job which sent him to Wilmington, where he soon was re-hired by the Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. and eventually became manager of the Wilmington Firestone store. After assignments in Baltimore and Salisbury, Md., he came to Dover in 1963 to work for Buchanan Firestone. His proudest achievement was starting the Carl King Tire Co. with Mr. King in 1976. He retired in 1989. Evan was a member of the Dover Lions Club, American Legion Walter Fox Post 2, VFW Post 3238, and BPOE Lodge 1903. He was a past president of Dover Lions Club and had received both the Melvin Jones and Ralph Helm fellowship awards. He was also a long time sponsor of Ducks Unlimited. Evan is survived by his wife of 57 years, Eileen; a son, Evan Hensley, Jr. and his wife Leslie of Dover; a daughter, Sheila Hunnicutt of Dover; and a daughter, Patricia Hensley of Alexandria, Va. He also leaves five grandchildren, Kenneth Hunnicutt of Dover, Amy Hunnicutt of St. Bernard, La., Evan Hensley III, Dylan Hensley, and Elise Hensley, all of Dover. There are three great-grandchildren in St. Bernard, La. Friends may gather from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 2, in the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming. Service will be 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 3, at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery, Dover. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Heart Association, 200 Continental Dr., Suite 101, Newark, DE 19713.
