DOVER - Eva Mae Finney Wilkins, the daughter of the late Eva Mae Finney Church and the late Belford Francis Finney, entered into eternal rest and peace on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at her home, where she wanted to be, with her daughters Shirley and Brenda at her side. She was born in Northampton County, Va., and was educated in the public schools there. She was a 1947 graduate of Northampton County High School where Mr. J. F. Banks was the principal. At an early age, she accepted the saving grace of our Lord and Savior and was united with New Allen Memorial AME Church in Franktown, Va. On Aug. 4, 1947, she married her childhood sweetheart and best friend, Lucius Grant Wilkins. God blessed their union with three children, Shirley, Brenda and Alvis. Later, after the family moved to Dover, "MaMa" joined Union Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of the Rev. J. H. Williams. She was a member of the United Women's Ensemble and the UMBC Senior Choir. She loved to sing the old spirituals and hymns of her childhood. One of her favorites was, "I'm Bound for Mt. Zion." She was a homemaker, wife and mother who put the needs of her family first, She worked part-time so she could-in her words-"be home with her children when they got off the school bus." Her favorite pastimes were reading medical books and newspapers, collecting recipes, sewing, and giving directions to PopPop. She was a nurturer who loved the very young and the very elderly. She was a late night telephone conversationalist who would talk as long as she could keep the other awake. A ready laugh and a quick smile made you feel welcomed in her home. MaMa and PopPop built a home of warmth and welcome where all were invited to share a meal and a glass of sweet tea. She was preceded in death by her son, Alvis in 1996; and by her loving husband of 50 years in 1997. She was also preceded in death by brothers, Robert, John and Belford Finney; and sisters, Annie Boone, Sarah Threadgill, and Pearl Wilkerson. Left to cherish Mama's legacy of love are two daughters, Shirley Wilkins Bowser, and Brenda Wilkins Rumley, (Rev. RJ. Rumley); six grandchildren, Ellery Bowser Jr., Robert Porter, Kevin Bowser, Alysha Bowser, Daniel Rumley and Jason Bowser; four sisters, Louise Ashby of Wyoming, Alice Bailey of Melfa, Va., and Joyce Finney of Wyoming; one brother-in-law, Moses Wilkins and his wife Agnes of Exmore, Va.; seven great-grandchildren, Eric Bowser, Charleston, S.C., Davis Porter, Birmingham, Ala., Tianniah Chelf Bowser and Madisyn Kochel Bowser of Dover, Lillian Porter of Lewes, Alexis Bowser, Vermont, and Imani Rae Bowser of Dover; two great-great-grandchildren, Cortez and Nevaeh; seven nephews, fifteen nieces and a host of extended family and friends. The family wishes to extend a special "Thank You" to MaMa's personal sitter, LaToya Allen; the Seasons Hospice and Addus Family including, Cahlisha, Michele, Pat, Ashley and Shawn. Service will be held at Bennie Smith Funeral Home, 717 W. Division Street on Saturday, April 14, 2012, at 11 a.m., with viewing one hour prior.
